On the notion of analysis and where to start your drawings
Empirical analysis and dialectic thinking
Today, most regard the term “mutation” as a description of a change in an individual gene, and more precisely as some minute alteration of the DNA of that gene, we will be applying this scientific idea to cities and buildings. Inherent in all of your sites, is the urban DNA of both Paris and Lausanne, we will be using these strips as a means to create a mutation or hybrid of the fabric of these two cities, and to use these mutations to make educated and precise understandings of the original cities.
In our first exercise, we played with the notion of collage, described by Andy Warhol as the art of the 20th century. This exercise was meant to introduce you to the notions of representation and narrative; your choice of images were used to reflect and tell a certain story (some more rigorous than others) but stories none the less, the same now will be applied to cut assigned to each group of 2. The architecture fragments that you are measuring should ultimately tell/reveal/detail a story, the manner that you do this will be developed throughout the year, but the fundamentals will be to learn how to propose a manner of critically thinking and developing an understanding of the representative nature of architecture and urbanism.
