A step toward unity - process

Using the result of the projet MEASURES as a basis, the site we were confronted to for  our new project, even though fictive, symbolized the merging of Paris and Lausanne.  As a starting point, we decided to concentrate on the evolution of one specific individual’s psychological comfort in time as it comes out of the existing and concrete streets of Lausanne and Paris, representing the person’s comfort zone of what he is used to and is confronted to the fictive site and it’s spaces representing everything that is external and unknown to the person.

From that point, we decided to determine a series of stages which would later lead us to the establishment of  distinct phases for our element illustrating the diminution of one’s psychological comfort and ease proportionally to an enlargement of the surrounding zone of unknown.

Second 1:5 model - bed configuration

The table being our departure element and willing to materialize the evolution of comfort through a variation of the horizontality, we decided to use the bed to create a modular double-element.

1:1 element - curve adaptable to the individual

Thereby, to ease and encourage the journey out of the comfort zone, the element we would develop would be conceived to offer an increasing physical comfort as the psychological comfort decreases.

1:1 element - configuration 1

Phase one: Beginning it’s journey, the individual seats alone in his confort zone and doesn't need a specific support.

1:1 element - configuration 2

Phase two: Firstly confronted to the external world, the individual’s stability is disturbed as it realizes the width of all that differs from it’s own way of functioning. To balance with the difficulty now present, an increase of the body’s confort is added, allowing the continuance of the journey.

Element 1:1 - configuration 3

Phase three: The individual finds itself alone and changed for the first time, affected by the external world he has been confronted to. It now starts questioning everything it considered as acquired and having reached a state further from it’s confort zone requires a entire support to continue progressing.

Element 1:1 - final configuration

Phase four: Now conscious of a new form of reality that englobes an infinity of realities, the individual is finally able to face the external world and by it’s acceptance, can entirely be a part of  it and is no longer in need of an external support.
