    Week 2

"Demolition sites: The high walls with their bister-colored lines around the chimney flues, reveal, like the cross-section of an architectural plan, the mystery of intimitate distributions... A curious spectacle, these open houses with their floorboards suspended over the abyss, their colorful flowered wallpaper still showing the shape of the rooms, their staircases leading nowhere now, their cellars open to the sky, their bizzare collapsed interiors and battered ruins. It all resembles, though without the gloomy tone, those uninhabitable structures, which Piranesi outlined with such feverish intensity in this etchings."

Questionning our basic ideas, we tried to understand the ambivalence oft the notions "balance" and "embracement" and to find out which atmosphere it expresses.  Inspired by Benjamin Walter's "Arcade Project", we would like to explore on the one hand the feeleing of security and on the other hand confinement and restriction, which are all included in the notion of embracement. Representing opposed elements of  Benjamin Walter’s quote like „the staircases leading nowhere“ and „cellars open to the sky",  our project won't express balance only physically but also conceptually.

Our  project is a tower, and consists of a spiral staircase, which disposes rooms circularly. We decided to put it in the middle of the proto-structure, it permits to watch the other projects from different levels in different dispositions.

    Week 1

By reconsidering our two projects "Planes", we tried to find out the main ideas and most important elements, which we could insert into our new project „Rooms“. Inspired by Tatlin Vladimir’s «Monument To The Third International», we decided to work on embracement and balance.

Tatlin Vladimir- Monument To The Third International 1919-1920

To better visualize the relations between our two projects, we had to draw the plan and the elevation of the proto structure, and to insert the details of our planes which we were interested in.

After analizing the drawings, we had the idea to superpose different levels in a shifted way and to find out the best possibility to express equilibration.

  • PLANES

    Par Mathilde Linder, 23/11/15

    1. Birth of the project

I choose to work around the first plaster of Lausanne with the idea to create a community space between various apartments and develop a living facade.

    3. Research - work with the plaster/cardboard

I first studied how to work to organize the vertical distribution of the apartements using the angle created by the entrance in the super-element. In a second step I studied how to connect the vertical elements with the horizontal community space.

I finally decided to work only with a section of my facade to show the best the imbrication of the two different elements (vertical and horizontal).

  • DOUBLE ELEMENT / CONCEPT
