    Behind the Rolex Learning Center, some protostructures have been built to allow each studio to test a part of their project. This assembly test is a very informative step to check the measures, the functioning of the structural system, the time that we need to built it, ...

    Tools at the studio

    07.05.17 - catalog & pictures 


    We develop some tools for cutting the pieces. There are a lot of identical pieces, specially for the cladding, and making these tools is a saving of time for cutting them. We make four cladding tool and 16 shims at different lengths. At first we put a shim at the bottom of the cladding tool. Then we place the timber of wood that we want to cut till the shim. Finally we cut the overcoming part.

    The high circulation and its rythm between the various users create the context's complexity. We address public space as a gradient and include both movement and punctual immobility in our project. Creating a spatial interaction that permits fluidity, both in uses and circulation, lead to a double ramp complimented by platforms, all resting on the protostructure.

    After "l'état des lieux", we realized that the direction of the slopes asked a lot of structural complications. Thus, we decided to redirect the project how it was initially : a slope to each side with plateforms. By making tests we decided to have 3 plateforms (A-B-C) and two slopes with various percent slope that provide the experience of walking/sitting/standing. The plateform A has a function of a bench with 50 cm of height and 40 cm of seat depths. The plateform B has a height of 80 cm. Other than the connection with the plateform A that it provides, 2-3 people can sit on it. By the high of (50 cm, same as A), the plateform C really has a role of connection between Lupi's and Chassot's project : we can go down through the second plateform of Chassot to our plateform C, and then again to Lupi's ground.

    Final approach - the flying floor

    We used straps to connect the timbers between them. This system is very useful for the transport (we just have to roll up and put them in the container) and to put them on the structure in situ.

    1:1 - structural introduction 


    In the first days we test and catalog some nodes for the main slope of our project. These three nodes are made in a draft way and have the function to introduce us with the future structural problems that we will meet. Then, these are not the final version.

          This node is the one asking for the lowest quantity of wood                                 Because of the gap's problem, we added a second vertical placed 

    (contrary of the two others) but the ramp is supported on the edge                            vertical placed in a staggered pattern to better support the bar 

       line (of the prominent wood) and not on the flat part of the bar                                                                   used for the slope.
