• MEASURES | THE SHOULDER | WEEK 4

Par Romain Iff, Aude Sahli, 02/11/16

Our project is based on a building located at a busy corner where bus lines meet and

pedestrians flow. The façade facing the main street has a large cover that extends past its

corners, and protects people from the rain. Because of this element, passers-by tend to cut the

corner of the building, almost hitting it with their shoulder, in order to get under cover as fast

as possible even if it means coming close to bumping against strangers who are trying do the

same. We have decided to built a room around this corner to emphasize the qualities of this architectural element,

and create a space that reinterprets paths within the city unconsciously followed.

Le dehors est toujours un dedans.

    - Le Corbusier, Précisions (1930)

Every spatial creation is first and foremost the enclosing of a subject… It is an act of free aesthetic contemplation when, with the aid of our imagination, we transport ourselves from the exterior that we see before us into the centre of the interior space.

    - August Schmarsow, “The Essence of Architectural Creation” (1893)

We began by observing the spaces of the city streets of Lausanne.

We identified and mapped the repeated human actions or movements that formed invisible patterns within this urban space. Surrounding and containing these repeated actions or paths of movement, we constructed a series of outdoor rooms: ‘slices’ taken out of the city street.

We then overlaid these rooms with an alien volume that had landed upon the city: the Toni Areal building in Zurich. In this way, the positive spaces of Zurich were superimposed over the negative spaces of Lausanne. Interpreting this superimposition, we constructed casts as hybrids between the Lausanne room and the Zurich artefact. Through investigating how to reconcile their contrasts in both two and three dimensions, we questioned contrasting notions of scale, volume and density in the city.

We imagined our perception oscillating continuously between the drawing and the cast, between the concave and the convex, and between surrounding and surrounded. We understood the rooms we constructed from within, as enclosures; and from without, as volumes.

When assembled together, the casts we created were no longer registers of Lausanne or Zurich, but were translated into something new: a new terrain in which heightened traces of both cities could be found.
