We wished to create a space using only vertical elements of timber. The first step toward this was to develop a modular structural grid to hold the vertical pieces, which are cut to a set of eight standardised lengths. Once we had established this system, we begun to explore the many spatial configurations the system could offer to find the optimum interior spatial quality. The experiences of visitors to this room differ as they play with different perceptions of the world through the object.
From the outside, the room appears as a strict geometry: a closed and dense cube. Yet the hint of a curve through the external walls tempts the user hints at something other. As the user steps inside, the understanding of the space changes completely. The cube unfolds into an introverted, cave-like interior where light and views are filtered and heightened.
Different perception of the outside, one cube-like, the other carved.
