        DRAWING.

    The verticality, fragile and thin, emerging in the protostructure, need to be strengthened with some diagonal. This primordial issue needs to make the project stable without altering the project. This require discussions with the ingenieur and research in drawing.

        PREFABRICATION.

    In parallel, structural elements, roof, and diagonals are getting prefabricated at the EPFL. A planning for the five days on the construction site is also done, revealing the real challenge oncoming.

  • Windy walls

    While we were doing the prefabrication of our frames, we needed to send the final Rhino file to the engineer in order to have his agreement to build our project. We did a skype with him to see the load descent in the proto.

    At first, when he used our system of bracing and kept our wall at height meters high, we had 1800 kilograms at the left foot of the protostructure.

    The engineer, Stephan and Teresa helped us to change something, like the bracing or the walls, in order to reduce the weight that went down to the foot. 

    At the end of the Skype, we made a strong decision but we all agreed that it would be even better than before. The solution was to low down our walls. Given that we had already made every frames, we chose to take away one series of frames for every walls, which means that every walls was 1.66 meters lower. This choice allows us to have not so much bracings, and allows us to keep the energy of the project, which is the space that are created inside those vertical walls. What's even nicer is that the horizon with the Marechal's screen showed up again, and the link with their project is stronger than before.

    Here is the scheme of the load descent that the engineer sent us when our walls were shorter.

    We still have 650 kilos that goes down to the left foot of the proto, but we are going to dig 50x50x50 holes to put the proto inside and then put concrete.

  • Prefabrication

    The last week before going in Evian, which is the fifth week for the House phase, we all worked on doing the prefabrication. We started by going couple times at the cutting site, we used the measures of our drawings and of our Rhino files.

    We then made some templates to assemble our frames with a right angle and with the correct distance. 

    We then all screwed our frames. All our frames are built in a way that every horizontals sits on the horizontals of the proto, and that it won't be too heavy to lift it up.

    Cette nouvelle configuration offre une toute nouvelle relation entre les différents projets, elle engendre une lecture de passage depuis le funiculaire jusqu'à la Grange au Lac. De plus, cela souligne un dialogue avec le projet des trois autres studios et crée un espace qui joue avec l'extérieur et l'intérieur, tel une cour intérieur donnant sur deux "House".

    Une décision qui fut prise en peu de temps mais qui nous a permis de réagir vite et efficacement face à la situation. Le fait d'être directement confronté avec le terrain et immergé dans ses nouveaux paramètres nous a permis d'avoir un réel échange continu entre le dessin et le terrain.

    Ce fut d'autant plus stimulant car le site de la Grange au Lac est doté de beaucoup de qualité, d'un part avec sa pépinière qui offre un jeu d'ombre et de lumière et d'autre part avec la hauteur des arbres qui crée un sentiment d'immensité. Ce sentiment qui fait écho aux murs de notre projet "Murmures".








  • Grange au Lac ?

    When we came back after the workshop, during the fourth week, we had a long discussion in order to re-organize ourself facing the new site. As a matter of fact we learned before going on holidays that the construction on the site of the Belvedere had been refused. We were all disappointed, because in our project we liked the energy of the site and the nice horizon made by the proto : indeed there was three studios but we managed to give the experience of one common project.

    After seing the photos of the new site and after talking with the students that went there, we were convinced that if we worked enough, we would have a project as nice or even better as we had before.

    We fixed all the details, we flipped our walls again so that it would be nice to walk inside them, we worked on the bracings, we made a work schedule so that we are already prepared when building will start in Evian. We organized ourself in order to work efficiently

    After that, I first worked with Jerôme on the third wall, the one next to screen, and he did a new drawing with the right node, the right slope and the right proto. Given that we only needed one drawing on the third wall, I chose to do the drawing of the first wall, the one non-permeable.

    In parallel, I wanted to also work on the 1:1. I then helped the students that went to the workshops, and they helped me to build correctly.

    Next thing we have to deal with is finding the right way to build the bracings, is finishing the cut and the measures of all our frames, and is making a 3D drawing to see how to put the pre-fabricated elements in the truck.
