  • Time for discussion

    Par Lefebvre Yann, 15/03/20

It’s 6 pm, We enter the room after a fairly quiet day. We see on our left a high wall that intrigued us then we decide to take a look. Behind this high wall we look at a room that looks very intimate. But we decide to continue on our way, and at this moment we make the discovery of a much larger room. I come down the stairs, but my friend comes down the other stairs. We find ourselves separated by a crossbar. We all put down our affairs, I sit and he stand and we start to debate !

    ______________________________________________________________________________

WEEK 1 : EXPLORATIONS AND FIRST INTENTION

Create a room to contemplate surrounding landscapes, was my first intention.

Located on the top of the protostructure this Room allows to contemplate a panorama of the landscapes like as a piece of art. Moreover, the shift entrance enables to create surprise or astonishment and thus make contemplation more impressive. The Room is divided in three parts : the entrance, a part to get together (with two friends) and the third part, more intimate (just for one person).

I work with disposition of four plans and protostructure, essentially by drawing in a first step, to achieve my thoughts.

    WEEK 2 : CONCEPTUAL CLARITY

After some reflexions, I change the main program of my project, considering it "naive" and simple. Indeed, it's not necessary to have a Room in a protostructure to contemplate a landscape, just sit on a bench or on the floor. It's for this reason I decided to change direction.

Trying to keep, in its entirety, the disposition of the plan, I create a space to share, discuss and debate in different ways.

First, a place to come over and discuss, have a friendly and cool discussion with a friend we haven't seen in a long time...This place is surrounding by two large plans to create intimacy. One is oblique to lean on.

The second place is more open, is a place to debate in one-to-one, have a discussion more academic. Then, I lowered the horizontal plan so that the protostructure plays an important role : separation between two people who debate.

Axonometry 1:20 - view of the intimacy place.

It's time to focus about articulations between plans and protostructure by shape it. Firstly, to test the volumetric I just use cardboard.

    WEEK 3-4 : STRUCTURAL THINKING

Now that the idea is clearer, think about structural connexions. I change the original shape of some plans to assemble them with te protostructure.

After round-trips between drawings and models, I discover some challenges. For instance, the fact that the protostructure plays an important role in the debate place, it create in the same time, disturbances in other places. That why I collaborate with an other projet to avoid theses issues.

WEEK 5-6 : DISCOVERING NEW TOOLS

By learning to use new tools, I continued the project. The model and drawings wasn't finished so I pursued them.

During this part of the project, I've made the different parts accessible by adding some elements : to avoid to step over, go down or up, to sit.

    PROCESS:

     Exploration and first meet.

I choose 2pm03 for the hour since it is an interlude time during the day, when an introversion moment is needed. You may want to clarify your mind and writing is perfect to do so.

There it is, a room to write.

Great. Yet, what does someone need to write?

I believe that intimacy is a keystone in writing but a space dedicated to it has to be at the same time open. This balance allows the blossoming of concentration and creativity simultaneously.

Thus I work on a simple shelter, guided by a light-shaft. I let people be free on their position to write, whether sat, laid or even stood.

    Image Sun Mar 15 2020 00:29:37 GMT+0100 (CET)

    Perspective and research drawings 1:10

     Atmosphere shaping.

Now that I have my purpose, I have to shape it. The entrance from beneath is  jettisoned for the sake of simplicity.

I have to focus on the main articulations: the terrace and the shelter, both writing places, one under the zenith, the other embraced by shadows. These spaces have to be linked. The horizontal plane is turned to emphasize the transition between the two spaces. A second light-shaft occurs. The oblique plane is moved in the shelter, still offering a seat on the terrace and now giving one in the shelter.

    Structural body

It has to stand, in symbiosis with the protostructure.

The columns are a leitmotiv, there are present in both the terrace and the shelter, characterizing them and giving sticking point to the room.

The beams are conspicuous on the floor, highlighting the link between the two parts of the room.

The two oblique planes are defined by a structural pattern which densifies itself where there is more weight, where people are likely to sit, giving shade and intimacy in sync.

Perspective of the anchors in the floor

With the model, new considerations have arisen.

The vertical oblique plane is going to be screwed on the beams, which likewise will be screwed on the columns and on the beams of the protostructure. This plane also plays the role of a diagonale among a cell, strengthening it.

Also, three lines are left empty on the floor, in order to display the anchoring and underline the link between the two spaces. The line at the foot of the shelter's entrance is not empty to not create the reverse effect: a separation.

Today is Jennie’s birthday, Lisa cooked a delicious dinner for us to celebrate together.

It’s 8pm, we enter the Room, I step on the second floor, install the projector, center it with the screen as well.

We take a sit on the first floor and lean against an oblique wall a bit taller than our head.

    It makes us feel comfortable.

Lisa puts the meal in front of us, on the higher plane, we take the dinner and enjoy the movie time.

  • The dining room

    Par Charamel Lucile, 14/03/20

It is 12 pm, on this spring day, I enter the room with my family.

Tired from this morning hike, I sit on the ground and lean on the inclined wall next to my father. My mother sits in front of us.

We discuss of this and that. My brother staying apart, over cross the bench and turning his back to us.

I am comfortably sheltered from the sun and happy to share this moment together, I observe the sunny face of my mother.

In this convivial moment, we start our lunch.

    WEEK 1: the first step

an exploration by drawings, to begin a conceptual position of  4 planes.

8 am, I enter the room with my notebook and my pencils. I sit on one of the two chairs obscuring the space. Thanks to the sunlight seeping through the narrow opening above my head, I begin my sketch. Facing the Rhône, I draw. A friend joins me, we discuss our loves, our friends and our problems. After our exchanges I need to be alone .

I get up and walk along the inclined wall,  go around it and discover behind a more secured, intimate and dark space, propitious to observation.

However, the passage is narrow, I pass with agility in this new place by regaining my balance using the wooden pillar. I sit cross-legged in this quiet place. Serene and hidden, behind closed door, I observe the forest and myself, when I see a bird on a branch, I observe it and sketch it silhouette in ink.

    WEEK 2: A new reflexion

change of main idea - new orientation of plans

    Image Thu Mar 26 2020 08:06:04 GMT+0100 (CET)

My research was to find volumes allowing to live together or for ourselves. Spatiality have to respond to the idea of a friendly space that must be large enough to welcome many people.

The space must provide to people protection and comfort, although it has a large opening to the outside.

WEEK 3 and 4: The structural part

Reflexion on the static aspect of the part, the assemblies and the fixations of the plans between them and the incorporation with the protostructure.

    The dining room

The room is located along the Rhone, in contact with the ground where it takes support. The room consists of only one main space: "the dining room" accompanied by a secondary space, useful for accessing and being able to rest.

The main volume is a friendly space to share a moment allowing 6 to 8 people sharing a convivial time. Seated face to face, some of them on the concrete bench and others resting against the oblique wall on the structural pillars. The bench, the oblique wall gives to the hikers, walking along the Rhône a casual place to have a nice picnic or to take a short break along the river. The access thru a narrow way opens on the dining room.

All the light entries lead the room to be a part of the surrounding, providing to the guest a strong belonging to their environment.

    Image Sat Mar 14 2020 19:51:32 GMT+0100 (CET)

The layout of the structure is given by its geographical position with a good orientation for the light, the river and the trees, and also provides a strong structural approach for the construction and bearing of the room.

The open space induces people to join together. The two pillars of the protostructure reorganize the room and  dividing  the spaciousness. The first pillar defines the entrance of the room. The second pillar allows to form partial separations between people, to form groups and new atmospheres.
