  • SCAFFOLDING, the disappearance of the protostructure

Par Gerbail Sébastien, Zeltner Loïc, 17/12/19

Scaffolding is the first time we experiment with the protostructure. The protostructure is a tool that manifests itself whenever there is a structure. The goal of this phase was to work around a topographical fiction, trying to implement some planes and playing with the different interactions between the made up ground, the protostructure and our planes.

When we were looking for a location to start our project, we stumbled upon a very interesting event, that we could not ignore. During the building process of the scale model of the protostructure, there had been many small mistakes that added up to the very center of the model. The slight imprecisions implemented in every action created a gap that was too wide to ignore, half a module long. This gave us the opportunity to work with the protostructure in a way we had not envisioned.

We started thinking about the concept of protostructure. We discovered that it is a universal grid that only manifests around where there is a fluctuation of space, provoked by a structure. It is a tool that helps in defining a scale for the various projects. The shape of the protostructure had been decided arbitrarily. It was supposed to be a single piece of longitudinal shape, but the cut destroyed this shape. In a nominalistic way, it annihilated the shape and created a new one.

There is no end to the protostructure. No beginning, no end. It manifests itself in an arbitrary way. The cut is a place where the protostructure does not manifests. It is still not a beginning nor an end. The protostructure is still a single universal shape of infinite size, but it's materialisation stopped in this precise moment. As we cannot sense it in this location, we tend to think that it is not there.

We tried to exaggerate this ambiguity by building a plane normal to what seems to be the main axis of the protostructure. This wall simulates an end to the protostructure, which is practically not possible. It accentuate the idea of division. The plane is a tool that cuts space. We give it a shape, we define its limits. This gives the illusion of a controlled space, manufactured with selected parameters. This plane exists, therefore the protostructure should manifest.
