• A JUNCTURE - House Review

This year, the two places chosen by ALICE y1 are sites on the banks of the Rhône and the Arve. The one we are working on is called "the Galpon site".

It reveals an industrial area hidden by trees and mixes public and private areas, such as the Galpon theater  as well as the warehouse for the waste of Geneva.

The site is surrounded by woods and has a rich biodiversity, however, the human footprint is very present on the site: the asphalt levelling the land spreads over a large portion of the Galpon site. This artificial soil implies that trees have been removed at this location, thus encouraging access for motor vehicles.

So these contrasts and the diversity make the site attractive and interesting for the establishment of the House project, A JUNCTURE.

The particularity of the site is that the house is located on a inclined slope through the woods and links the parking lot to the water.

The house mixes several themes such as reunification, to gather people in a place that draws a parallel to the junction.

It is a place where we can debate about the environment such as the debate room located on the ground floor, at the parking lot level.  We can also observe it through the flows with the observatory, located on the top floor at 7.6 meters from the water. The links to the environment are omnipresent throughout the house, for exemple the gardens with the mush'room and the perma sup. The house give you an easy access to the Arvre river thanks to the dock, cool place to enjoy the surrounding environement.

It is also a cultural and social place with the theatre, located at 5.1 meter from the water.

The particularity of the site is that the visitor is guided chronologically through the house, he goes from the stairs on the parking lot to the dock a the bottom, next to the water.

The protostructure has been structurally strengthened to make possible the construction of the different parts, by adding fondations, densification and bracing elements.

A part of the protostructure has been removed though, regarded as unnecessary and space taken.

This week, improvements have been made to the structure. First of all, fondation work has been added. Then the stairs on the parking lot has changed and is now composed of many horizontal wooden rectangular platforms. A fountain along the slope of the stairs has also been developed and added. The shape of the balcony has evolved from a simple circle to a square. However, benches at its corners keep the circular shape of the walkway.

The bleachers of the debate room are now in a semi-circular shape, making the theater its only access. We also reduced the height of the backstage to solve the problem of intersection with the slope. A great job has been made by the garden group as well; they have developed different concepts as a mushroom place or a vegetal wall.

In the followings day, we will work on the drawings; with the amelioration of the site (trees and ground) and we will also add the observatory which was added too late last week. The structure will be reviewed to support the loads.

We also developped the project by including a back stage underneath the bleacher and the walkway. This new room is surrounded by a tight lathing with a tiny horizontal opening allowing light supply.

The house is divided by 3 main rooms, each of them linked by a dense a dense network of stairs and walkways, sometimes intersected by balconies. In this way, each element of transition makes it easier for visitors to walk around and rest.

The "House"  is characterized by geometries closely related to the environment, such as the slope, the verticality of the trees etc... If, at the south side of the project, we can observe a linear dynamics in relation to the parking lot, the North side rushes towards the river following the slope of the natural site.

Taking into consideration the past projects projects provided as a starting point, the House intends to offer a wide choice of use to the occupants. It has several "Rooms", scenes, that present diffenent spatial conditions. Spaces are used as debate room like we said earlier, others for theatre stages, concerts scenes or gathering spaces.

At the bottom of the house (located north), a platform allows visitors to communicate better with the river. In the center, at the height of the surrounding trees, a terrace can be the ideal place to spend a moment of relaxation while participating, enjoying either the dabate or the show.

The particularity of proposing several options of use goes hand in hand with the multiplicity of levels in the house

Here are some other point of view of the House
